This report is for educational leaders and policymakers who want to understand the evolving AI World and help our students prepare to thrive in it.
This report looks at the growing gap between the attention paid to the development of intelligence in machines and humans. It argues for placing a greater priority on the development of human intelligence, as well as the need for humans to develop skills necessary to collaborate with machines in a way that both amplifies their own intelligence and celebrates their humanity.
It begins with an overview of the history and limitations of our existing efforts to develop intelligence in humans and then looks at the accelerating advances in artificial intelligence (AI) that are starting to disrupt work and life. It covers everything from the imminent evolution of autonomous AI agents and the development of superintelligent AI systems, to the broader social and economic implications of AI's progression that we are starting to see.
We make a strong case for the development of academic deep learning programs complemented by efforts to amplify human intelligence with new technologies. We outline a practical roadmap for schools to begin implementing changes, including the development of AI literacy programs, so that all students can succeed in the AI world. We argue that such efforts should be complemented by efforts to prioritize the development of unique human attributes such as caring, courage, and love.
Our approach does require a change to the underlying grammar of education, but without it we risk employing AI tools to simply hyperscale approaches to education developed in the early twentieth century. These approaches are arguably not only inappropriate for today, but they will certainly be inadequate in a world where we live and work with multiple machines that are smarter than us in many aspects and where the massive rate of constant change will require individuals to learn on their own to thrive.
These changes will require educators to embrace significant change, overcome entrenched grammars, and attract funding, but we know that in this time of unprecedented transition to a world of machine intelligence that educators are up to the challenge. There is no better group of people to help humanity flourish than educators.
There is so much information out there on AI and generative AI at the moment. Bauschard and Quidwai have managed to condense a great deal of thought leadership on the subject into this deep learning paper. This piece is a must-read for strategic leaders of all varieties.
- Tom Rogerson, Head of School, Cottesmore (Prep school of the year, U.K.)
Bauschard & Quidwai’s groundbreaking report provides a clear and comprehensive overview of the core ideas surrounding AI and deep learning, coupled with actionable recommendations for educators on how to integrate this technology into their practice. Filled with both theory and practical examples, this report is a “must read '' for educators and educational leaders at all levels.
